Located on the West Coast of Canada Vancouver Island's East coast is riddled with tricky currents and tidal rapids, while it's West Coast can have some of the biggest, burliest water in North America. Due to it's exposure and remoteness the Northwest coast in particular can be both a paddler's dream and nightmare. This coming May/June I, Russell Henry will make a kayak attempt to break the record for circumnavigating Vancouver Island by human power.

The record is currently held by Comox's Colin Angus when he completed the trip in a rowboat in 15 days, 11 hours, and 47 minutes. The fastest sea kayak time is by Joe O'Blennis at 16 days, 12 hours, 14 minutes.

Being nearly 1100 kilometers around Vancouver Island is a daunting task. Paddling solo I will have to average over 70 kilometers a day for two weeks.

Holy smokes.
